Amazon founder Jeff Bezos celebrated his 60th birthday on Friday (January 12), and this is the time to delve into the history of the company

Today, Amazon is one of the biggest companies, but it was founded by Mr Bezos in a garage in Washington in 1994

It started as an online marketplace for books, but turned into The Everything Store, catering to almost everyone

But it's history is very interesting - as revealed by Mr Bezos himself to author Brad Stone

Amazon was initially incorporated as Cadabra - a play-on-words of the magical word "abracadabra"

It was, however, changed a few months later as Mr Bezos' lawyer misheard it as "cadaver" or a dead body (Yikes!)

So, Mr Bezos and his team brainstormed other names and searched for something "exotic and different"

He looked through a dictionary and stumbled on "Amazon" and found it suitable for his business

The Amazon is the largest river in the world, which Bezos felt fit in his dream of building earth's largest bookstore

And it also had the benefit of starting with an "A", which would place it near the top of lists in alphabetical order
