Summer is fun, but it can be tough on toddlers. They overheat faster and dehydrate more quickly. Here's how to keep your little one safe and cool when temperatures climb

Hydration: Offer water every 30-45 minutes, not just when they ask. For kids 1-3 years, aim for 4-5 cups of fluids per day total, including milk. Skip sugary juices

Playing outside: Plan park trips before 10 AM or after 5 PM. Check surfaces with the back of your hand. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for bare toddler feet

Dressing: Go for loose, light-coloured cotton clothes. One layer is enough indoors with a fan and AC. Skip synthetic fabrics; they trap heat

Sunscreen: Use a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, SPF 30+. Apply 15 minutes before going out, and reapply every 2 hours or after water play

Heat exhaustion signs: Move to a cool room, offer sips of water, use a cool wet cloth on the neck or armpits. If they're vomiting, confused or not responding, call your doctor

Diet: Offer water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon, curd, buttermilk, coconut water. Small, frequent meals work better than 3 big ones. Avoid outside street food

Car: Never leave them in a parked car, and its interiors can go above 50 degrees C within 10 minutes, even with windows cracked
