NASA regularly monitors space rocks, also called asteroids, that make close approach to Earth

The latest to pass by Earth is a 100-foot (the size of an airplane as per NASA) asteroid on April 10

Called 2024 FT2, it will pass the Earth at a distance of 4.5 million kilometres today

It is moving at a speed of nearly 12 kilometres per second and is expected to pass by Earth late at night (as per IST)

Though it is not expected to hit the Earth, 2024 FT2 has still been designated as Near Earth Asteroid by NASA due to its close proximity

NASA says asteroids are rocky remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago

Most of this ancient space rubble can be found orbiting our Sun between Mars and Jupiter - the main asteroid belt

Asteroids range in size from Vesta - the largest at about 530 kilometres in diameter - less than 10 metres across

The total mass of all the asteroids combined is less than that of Earth's Moon
