Madhya Pradesh saw a 74.6 per cent voter turnout till 6 pm today in the crucial elections for the heartland state's 230 assembly seats, which is higher than the 72.7 per cent voting recorded in 2013. Mizoram, the BJP's last frontier in the north-east, too, saw a turnout of 75 per cent, far less than last election's 83.4 per cent. Figures for both states are likely to go up as these are provisional numbers. Sporadic incidents of voting machines (EVMs) and paper trail (VVPAT) machines malfunctioning were reported from both the states. The Election Commission said they have been replaced. In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP, led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, is seeking a fourth term in power. The Congress is banking on anti-incumbency for what it calls a "make or break election". Mizoram is one of the five states where Rahul Gandhi's party is still in power. For the BJP, it is a crucial box to be ticked to reach their goal of ruling the northeast.
