Tokyo Stocks Open Flat

Tokyo stocks opened almost flat on Monday, with the market lacking fresh incentives after rallying more than three per cent last week.

The Nikkei 225 index, which rose 3.6 per cent last week, gained 0.16 per cent, or 24.60 points, to 15,342.94 in the first few minutes.

The dollar was at 102.41 yen in early Asian trade, compared with 102.34 yen in New York late Friday.

The euro bought $1.3391 and 137.15 yen against 1.3397 and 137.11 yen in US trade.

US shares rebounded late Friday to end mixed after an early bout of selling on news that Ukraine had shelled Russian armoured vehicles after they entered its territory.

Worries that the incident would lead to a direct clash between the two ebbed after Moscow denied the incursion, and Kiev's foreign minister met his Russian counterpart in Berlin on Sunday for talks alongside the top diplomats from France and Germany.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended down 0.30 per cent at 16,662.91, after earlier having shed 0.50 per cent on the Ukraine news.
