Income Tax Refund: Heres How To Check The Status

The new income tax e-filing portal has made paperless filing of Income Tax Return (ITR) and other tax-related services easier, smooth, and more efficient.

A taxpayer is always urged to file their IT return as soon as possible. The earlier they file, the sooner would they be able to receive their tax refund. The last date for filing IT return for the fiscal 2020-21 is March 31, 2022.

If taxpayers' taxes have been paid in excess of their actual tax liability, they are entitled to a refund. When a taxpayer seeks a refund on their tax return, the income tax department processes it, and the taxpayer receives an intimation from the Centralized Processing Centre or CPC under Section 143(1), which confirms the amount of refund the taxpayer is entitled to.

Income tax refunds are processed between 20 and 45 days after the ITR has been processed. If a taxpayer has not received their refund, the first thing they should do is check the status of the refund. There are two ways to so do — through the NSDL portal and income tax e-filing website.

Here's how a taxpayer can view the refund status on the income tax e-filing portal:

Visit the e-Filing portal with User ID, Password, Date of Birth / Date of Incorporation and Captcha.

Go to My Account and click on Refund/Demand Status.

There details such as assessment year, status, reason for refund failure (if any) and mode of payment will be displayed.

Here's how a taxpayer can view the refund status on the TIN NSDL website:

Visit the refund status page on the NSDL website.

In the screen that appears, enter your PAN, assessment year, and the captcha that appears.

Click on Proceed.
