Traffic violations and accidents caused due to reckless driving and flouting of rules are not uncommon across the country.

Keeping this in mind, the Central government amended the Motor Vehicles Act in 2019. With the amendment came a new set of rules and fines to be implemented across the country.

To tackle the number of unregistered vehicles in Delhi, the state government will be charging the fine as spelt out in MV Act on those driving without a legal registration plate.

Before we break down the penalty amounts, here's what you will need to avoid being fined:

  • Valid licence
  • Registration certificate
  • Pollution under control certificate
  • Insurance policy (Third-party liability)

Here's how you can pay the challan online if required:

  1. Each state has its website for paying the challan online. So visit the website associated with your state. A simple search online will take you to the required site.  
  2. Enter your challan number and vehicle/licence number.
  3. Some states may require you to enter the captcha code.
  4. Confirm the details of the vehicle and traffic offence, and then proceed to pay the amount.
  5. Download an e-receipt.

Here are the traffic fines amounts in Delhi:

Those driving/ riding without a licence will be charged with ₹5,000 and/or community service.

Using unauthorized vehicles without a licence will be fined any sum between ₹1,000- ₹5,000.

Driving or riding under the influence of an intoxicating substance will cost you ₹10,000 and/or six months in prison. Repeat violators will be charged ₹15,000 and/or two years in jail. 

Those overspeeding will be charged between ₹1,000- ₹2,000 for light motor vehicles. For multi-purpose vehicles or human-powered vehicles, the fine amount is ₹2,000- ₹4,000 + licence seizure. 

If you do not have insurance for your vehicle, you can be charged ₹2,000 and/or 3-months of prison and/or community service. A subsequent offence will attract a penalty of ₹4,000.

Remember to wear a seat belt, or you could be fined ₹1,000 and/or community service. Similarly, riding without Helmet – for both riders and pillion riders – will be fined ₹1000 and/or licence disqualification and community service for three months.

Speeding and racing will incur a penalty of ₹5,000 and/or three months in prison and/or community service. 

Subsequent violations can lead to a fine of ₹10,000 and up to 1 year in prison and community service.

Dangerous driving/riding and jumping a red light will be fined ₹1,000- ₹5,000 and/or six months to 1 year in prison as well as licence seizure. 

Violating road regulations can be fined anything between ₹500- ₹1000. 

Driving or riding while on the mobile will incur a penalty of ₹5,000 while driving despite disqualification attracts a fine of ₹10,000 and/or community service.

If you do not give way to emergency vehicles, you may be fined ₹10,000 and/or community service.

Overloading two-wheelers will attract a fine of ₹2,000, licence disqualification, and/or 3-months of community service. Meanwhile, overboard passengers will be fined ₹200 for every extra passenger and/or community service.

Juvenile offences will attract a fine of ₹25,000 with three years of prison, cancellation of registration for one year, and juvenile ineligible for the licence until 25 years of age.

An offence committed by enforcing authorities, such as offering bribes, will incur a fine of twice the penalty. This will vary based on the traffic rules being violated. 

Meanwhile, refusing to share information under orders of the traffic authority or disobeying orders will be fined ₹2,000.

Vehicles without permits will attract a fine of ₹10,000 and/or up to six months in prison and community service.

Driving without registration will be fined ₹5,000. Subsequent offences will be charged ₹10,000.
