Indian planning 'fake' marriage jailed in UK

London: An Indian, who planned to stage a 'fake' marriage in order to stay in the UK, has been jailed for 16 months by a British court for conspiring to breach the country's immigration laws.

The woman whom he intended to marry was also sent to 14 months in prison, authorities said.

The prosecution of the Indian, who was not identified, was part of the UK Border Agency's enforcement action against people involved in smuggling, illegal working and fake marriages.

"Where we uncover suspicious marriages we will challenge them and prosecute where appropriate. We take this kind of abuse of the immigration system very seriously, and we
are working closely with churches and registrars to identify suspected fake marriages," a UK Border Agency spokesperson said.
