What is Long covid

Most people with COVID-19 experience mild symptoms or moderate illness. Approximately 10-15% of cases progress to severe disease, and about 5% become critically ill.

Typically, people recover from COVID-19 after 2 to 6 weeks.

While most people with COVID-19 recover and return to normal health, some people can have symptoms that last for weeks or even months. 

The persistent state of ill health after recovery is known as ‘Post COVID or Long COVID'. During this time, people are not infectious to others.

Even people who are not hospitalized and who have mild illness can experience persistent or late symptoms.

A wide range of long-term symptoms are: Fatigue, headache, chest pain, muscle pain,  loss of smell, persistent cough, shortness of breath, abdominal pain and rash.

COVID-19 may increase the risk of long-term health problems like inflammation of the heart muscle, lung function abnormalities,  loss of taste & smell.

Long term effects of COVID-19 can also be depression, anxiety, changes in mood.

Though more research is needed to examine the long-term consequences of COVID-19 but it is seen that it can result in prolonged illness, even in children.
