Herd immunity is the indirect protection from an infectious disease that happens when a population is immune either through vaccination or immunity is developed through previous infection.

To safely achieve herd immunity against COVID-19, a substantial proportion of a population would need to be vaccinated, lowering the overall amount of virus that can spread among the whole population.

There are two shots of the COVID-19 vaccine that needs to be taken by each eligible individual for sufficient protection against COVID-19. Eight months after the vaccine rollout, here's how vaccinated is India and the world against COVID-19.

In the vast majority of the world, vaccination coverage is still very, very low. And in fact, in many countries, they have not yet vaccinated even the healthcare workers and the older people who are the most vulnerable. So in such countries, there is a huge risk that future waves will continue to occur and devastate the population, both in terms of health and lives, but also in terms of the economy: Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, World Health Organization
