In an order that strikes at the heart of VVIP culture in India, the Supreme Court today struck down a 2016 law passed by the Akhilesh Yadav government that provided lifetime housing to former chief ministers in Uttar Pradesh. Government bungalows are public properties that belong to the people, the Supreme Court ruled, and said that chief ministers, once they demit office, are at par with common citizens. Tonight on Livestream, we ask whether the same principle should be extended to other VVIPs who overstay their welcome in official bungalows, long after demitting office.
