Historically, begari derived from the word beggar was a system of forced labour invented by the British to exploit workers in farms. In Varanasi and other parts of Uttar Pradesh, the term was borrowed by poorly paid embroiderers to describe their situation. It continues to be used by highly skilled women who believe their struggle will only end when they become economically independent.
