In recent months Rajasthan has been getting an unfortunate label as one of the centres for hate speech and hate crimes. Perhaps nothing illustrated that more than the brutal killing which shocked the nation a month ago. A viral video of man from Rajasthan, Shambhulal Regar, murdering a Muslim labourer on camera. As he committed the murder, Regar claimed that it was an act of revenge against what he called "Love Jihad". Specifically, Regar claimed a Muslim man had run away with a Hindu girl from his village. On Reality Check, we reveal how the trigger for this brutal act may have very different - Regar's own infatuation with a minor girl, as well as incendiary hate speech videos on the internet.
