Of the 222 seats for which votes were counted in Karnataka on Tuesday, the BJP won 104, eight short of a clear majority. The Congress got 78 and Deve Gowda's JDS 38. It is up to Governor Vajubhai Vala to decide who will get first shot at proving their strength - the BJP or the Congress-Gowda team. BS Yeddyurappa and HD Kumaraswamy are set to seek a second round of meetings with the governor on Wednesday morning after their respective legislature parties formally elect them leaders.
