Nanjangud, about 20 kilometres from Mysore in Karnataka, is known for its Shiva temple and bananas. The town is now witnessing a bypoll battle between a former Congressman who joined the BJP, and the ruling Congress itself - right in Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's stronghold. With elections due in Karnataka next year, the results could be seen as a test of the chief minister's popularity as he leads the party into the election in one of the few states where the Congress is in power.
