Random checks of VVPAT or voter paper trail slips to verify whether votes have been recorded accurately, will be increased across the country, from 1 to 5 in every assembly, after a Supreme Court order. The Supreme Court was hearing a petition by opposition leaders of 21 parties who wanted the number of VVPATs to be increased to 50 per cent in every assembly segment. Former Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla who recently wrote a book 'Every Vote Counts: The story of India's Elections' told NDTV that in his opinion this was satisfactory, and he hopes this puts to end the doubts that have been raised.
