The Covid-19 pandemic has hit pavement dwellers the hardest. Their uncertain livelihoods have been brought to a grinding halt by the lockdown. In Kolkata's Bowbazar where thousands live on pavements on the main road and in narrow lanes leading to it, women made a living selling plastic goods door to door while men pulled rickshaws. But all that has been ceased. For them, no cash means no food. Unless the state or non-profit organisations step in. But is that sustainable?
