Championed by the BJP during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the famed "Gujarat model" of development is now facing a trial, ahead of the state polls this month, in Sanand. About 40 km away from Ahmedabad, Sanand is in news these days because of the Tata Nano car factory which was set up almost eight years ago. The government of Gujarat, then under Chief Minister Narendra Modi, had given 11,000 acres of land in 2009 to Tata Motors. "Tata had asked for 350 acres of land but the CM saheb gave them 1,100 acres of land. And also a loan of Rs. 9,000 crore with no interest," said Pankaj Singh, Congress party state general secretary.
