No more trees need to be cut at Mumbai's Aarey and those that had to be removed have been cut, the Maharashtra government today told the Supreme Court, which ordered status quo at the site until October 21, when the case will be taken up by the Forest Bench. The state government said the court had ordered status quo or no activity only for the cutting of trees and construction can take place on the 33 hectares of land cleared at Aarey for a Metro car-shed. "There is no status quo on construction on the 33 hectares of Aarey land that has been cleared," said Maharashtra government lawyer Nishant Katneshwarkar.
