This year, on the occasion of Ganga Saptami on May 2, Ganga Swachhta Sankalp Divas was observed in Uttar Pradesh to spread awareness about cleanliness of Ganga. Swachhta events were organized across 12 locations including Varanasi by the National Mission on Clean Ganga to encourage public participation and make them aware about the issues plaguing Ganga. From open defecation to indiscriminate dumping of untreated sewerage, garbage and industrial waste, there is a lot that needs to be done to tackle pollution of this river.
