A staggering 163 million people and roughly 81 million women in India today are living without access to clean water close to home, making India the country with the highest population struggling without this basic resource, every day. This lack of clean water affects women and girls the most throughout their lives because they bear the burden of walking long distances to collect water which in turn affects their education, health and opportunities to grow in life. Globally, October 11 is observed as International Day of the Girls and to mark this day, film director, actor and producer, Shekhar Kapur has collaborated with WaterAid, a not-for-profit organisation to create a short animation, 'Brides of the Well', which brings to life the issue of water scarcity in India.
