Why Do Indian Passports Come In 4 Colours?

Ever noticed Indian passports aren't all the same? India issues four passport colours, and each one reflects the traveller's role. Here's what each colour means!

1. Blue Passport - For Most Travellers

The Navy Blue passport is the most common. It is issued to ordinary citizens for personal travel, work or tourism abroad. This is the passport most Indians carry.

2. White Passport - For Government Officials

The White passport is issued to Indian government officers and diplomats-on-duty. It helps foreign authorities identify them during official travel.

3. Maroon Passport - For Diplomats

The Maroon passport is exclusive to  high-ranking diplomats, ambassadors and top Indian representatives abroad. It comes with special privileges.

4. Orange Passport - Designed For ECR Category

The Orange passport was proposed for travellers with ECR (Emigration Check Required) status, mainly for workers in select countries.
