The old wooden stairs to the Taj Mahal's main mausoleum will now be replaced with Sal wood in a stainless steel frame, reported The Print.

Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) approved the change after multiple reports of tourists slipping or twisting ankles on the worn stairs.

As per the Agra Approved Guides Association, the wooden stairs have loosened, worn edges, and cracks from years of heavy use.

ASI Agra's proposal to replace the unsafe stairs has now been cleared for implementation.

Two decades ago, the marble steps were covered with wood to prevent slipping. These were last replaced 8 years ago.

For the first time, stairs will combine Sal wood and stainless steel for better strength and durability.

Replacement work will happen on one side at a time, so visitors can continue their tour without delays.
