Armed with the Supreme Court's ruling on the Rafale deal, BJP activists on Saturday staged a protest here seeking an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi, cleared of contempt after his apology for attributing his phrase "Chowkidar Chor Hai" to the Supreme Court, said today that the top court's decision on the Rafale case had "opened a huge door to an investigation" into his allegations of corruption in the deal for 36 fighter jets from France.

Rahul Gandhi today admitted that he had misquoted the Supreme Court after its ruling on the Rafale fighter jet deal and said he had done it as "rhetorical flourish in the heat of political campaigning", without having seen, read or analysed the order.

Hours after the Supreme Court rejected the Centre's stand and ruled that classified documents accessed by the media can be used as evidence to consider requests to reexamine the Rafale jet deal, Rahul Gandhi crowed that his words had been vindicated.

After the centre requested the Supreme Court to correct a "factual error" in its judgement that gave the government a clean chit on the Rafale deal for 36 fighter jets from France's Dassault, the opposition said that the ruling BJP allegedly gave "wrong information" in the documents asked by the top court.

Ruling out referring the Rafale deal to a parliamentary panel, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley launched a blistering attack on the Congress, calling it and said the Comptroller and Auditor General's view of the deal is not relevant after the Supreme Court's clean chit.
