The UK will take up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi the warning by Moody's Analytics that there has been a rise in ethnic tensions in India during his maiden visit to the country next week, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office today tore into what it called "irresponsible and distorted reporting by certain sections of the Indian media" in connection with a Moody's Analytics report that was critical of the government.

Referring to the "ethnic tensions" in the wake of controversies over beef and other issues, Moody's today said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must keep BJP members in check or risk "losing domestic and global credibility".

In its latest 'Inside India' report, Moody's Investors Service said the consensus view on India's economic growth prospects is relatively optimistic -- in line with Moody's baseline scenario of economic expansion of 7.5 per cent in the current fiscal.

The report stated lower fiscal deficits, inflation rates and a strengthened banking sector will allow higher growth levels to be sustained at around 7.5 per cent over the next 5-10 years.
