Chennai: A woman professor who heads the journalism department at a top university in Madurai in Tamil Nadu was stabbed on campus today.

Professor E Jenefa, 40, is recovering in hospital. The police say she was attacked at the state run Madurai Kamaraj University by a former guest lecturer, Jothi Murugan, who was a temporary hire.

Ms Jenefa had reportedly ended his contract, allegedly due to complaints against him. The man who has a PhD, according to the police, had bribed Professor Jenefa but she refused to give him back his job.

The attacker was caught by students and handed over to the police, according to local media.

A police officer said "She suffered cut injuries in 13 places. She is safe.  We are investigating. We have not yet spoken to her and hence we are unable to confirm anything ".
