Karnataka to develop sandalwood orchards on 10,000 acre land

Bangalore: Karnataka Government would develop "Siri Chandana Vana" (sandalwood orchards) on 10,000 acres of land in the state, Forest Minister C P Yogeeshwara said on Friday.

Ten to 12 regions in the districts of Kolar, Mysore, Shimoga, Chikamagalur and Hassan, among others, have been identified for the orchards, he told reporters in Bangalore.

He said the practice of honouring outstanding forest staff with state awards would be revived this year.

Awards would be presented to the best staff - from watchers to senior officials - at a function in Bangalore on July 10, Mr Yogeeshwara said.

The Minister said an alternative road to the neighbouring state of Kerala is planned to be developed without "affecting" forest areas.
