States Asked To Stop, Shelter Migrants Walking Back Home Amid Coronavirus Lockdown, Other Top Stories

States should seal borders and encourage migrant labourers to stay where they are by providing food and shelter, the Centre said today in an attempt to ensure the countrywide lockdown that had gone off-track over the last few days. Those who violated lockdown and went home, should be placed in 14-day quarantine, the Centre said, asking the states to provide them with food and shelter during this period.
In a move to curb the movement of migrant workers on roads and highways, the Centre on Sunday used the Disaster Management Act to fix responsibility on district magistrates and senior superintendents of police to seal district and state borders while making arrangements for those on the roads to be housed in shelters besides also dissuading such workers from leaving their current place of stay. The Centre on Sunday ordered states to ensure there is no movement of people across cities or highways after migrant workers left in their thousands for their homes in violation of lockdown rules. Terming the large-scale scramble - which made a mockery of social distancing - a "violation", the government directed states to keep such people in a government quarantine facility for at least 14 days after screening.
