Acid Thrown on Class 12 Student in Punjab, 2 Suspects Arrested

Two men have been arrested for allegedly throwing acid on a class 12th student at Kahnuwan town in Gurdaspur, police said on Thursday.

Manpreet Singh alias Manna and his friend Ajit, both residents of Paiowali village in Amritsar were arrested yesterday for attacking a state-level netball girl player at Kahnuwan town on Wednesday when she was going back home after appearing for her examination, SSP Gurdaspur, Gurpreet Singh Toor said.

A bottle of acid and the motorcycle used in the crime have been recovered, he said.

The accused took the extreme step after making several unsuccessful attempts to woo the girl, police said.

Several police teams had been constituted to nab the culprits after the crime was reported.

The victim who received 60 per cent burn injuries has been admitted to a private nursing home in Amritsar.

Punjab Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema had condemned the act and called it extremely shameful in a statement.

He also ordered the Punjab School Education Board to conduct special exams for the victim after her recovery and declare the results with the rest of the students.

Mr Cheema also spoke to the victim's brother and assured him help from the state government and education department.
