Watch: How Stray Dogs Are Turning Into Crime-Fighting Watchdogs

Cheil has partnered with Soi Dog Foundation for this initiative.

Highlights

  • Soi Dog Foundation and Cheil are developing vests for stray dogs to wear
  • These vests come with a camera to report suspicious activities to police
  • They hope the initiative will reverse negative perceptions about strays
In Bangkok, a unique initiative to counter the negative perceptions about stray dogs is underway. The Soi Dog Foundation, along with a Cheil, is developing smart vests with cameras that dogs can wear. The live broadcast cameras are activated when the dogs bark, and the footage is streamed directly to a small team of their employees. In this way, these crime-stopping stray dogs directly report suspicious activities to the police.

"We hope this initiative, entirely funded by Cheil, will go a small way to showing street dogs in a better light and slowly help to change negative attitudes towards them," writes Soi Dog Foundation in their Facebook post.

The programme will be implemented in the Dusit district of Thailand, and, if successful, will be rolled out to other parts too.

"It's too early a stage to say how practical the vests are," says Martin Tuner of Soi Dog Foundation to Al Jazeera.
