Sean Spicer,
the former White House press secretary, left many stunned after a surprise appearance at the Emmys but not everyone was thrilled to see him crash the awards show. Mr Spicer, who resigned in July in one of the many shake-ups of US President Donald Trump's White House, was the highlight of host Stephen Colbert's opening monologue which took a
heavily political tone.
When Mr Colbert asked how many people were watching the Emmys, Mr Spicer slid onto the stage behind a White House-style podium and declared, "This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period. Both in person and around the world."

The remarks were, of course, a reference to Mr Spicer's assertion at the very start of his tenure that Mr Trump's inauguration was the most attended ever, pressing the president's claims despite photographic evidence to the contrary.
Mr Spicer's tongue-in-cheek cameo stunned the Emmys audience including Melissa McCarthy, who picked up a Creative Arts statuette for her "Unhinged Spicey" impersonation of him on
Saturday Night Live.

But not everyone was thrilled at the "normalisation" of Mr Spicer. Many argued he had deliberately misled the American public during his tenure as Press Secretary:
