Here's how a Maharashtra-bound train accidentally ended up in Madhya Pradesh (Representational Image)
Thousands of farmers who were returning to Maharashtra after attending a rally in New Delhi ended up in Madhya Pradesh instead after the train they were on travelled in the wrong direction for close to two hundred kilometres.
The specially chartered train, Swabhimani Express, was carrying close to 1,500 farmers of the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee. The farmers had attended a large protest in the capital on November 20, demanding relief from debts and better prices for their produce.
The train, which left Delhi late on Monday night, was reportedly diverted to a wrong track and travelled 175 kilometres before the mistake was discovered.
According to sources, the Agra controller is likely responsible for the train ending up in the wrong state. Sources say that from Mathura, the train was supposed to take the Western railway route but somehow ended up on the Central railway tracks instead.
Railway authorities were left stumped, unsure what to do with the thousands of farmers stranded at the Banmore railway station near Gwalior.
Angry farmers, demanding to know how the bizarre mix up occurred, protested on the tracks, even stopping a goods train.
Within half an hour, the Swabhimani Express was rescheduled towards Jhansi. The farmers are expected to reach their intended destination by Thursday morning.Click for more
