Mumbai Rains: Water logging in several areas in Mumbai resulted in slow traffic and slight train delays

Mumbai: Mumbai rains have resulted in water logging in some parts of the city today along with delays in trains and traffic moving slowly. The Indian Meteorological Department has said that heavy to very heavy rains were expected to continue. Two people died and five were injured on Sunday after a tree fell on them near Metro Cinema at MG Road in South Mumbai's Marine Lines area. A 13-year-old boy was killed and his parents were injured in a wall collapse on their house at Wadol village in Thane at around 2 am today.

15-year-old also died after falling into an open pit in Mumbai's Malad suburb.

A huge section of the compound wall of Lloyds estate in south Mumbai's Wadala area collapsed today morning and took with it at least 15 vehicles due to heavy rain. Residents were evacuated and no casualties were reported.

In South Mumbai's Colaba and Santa Cruz, rainfall of 90 mm and 195 mm were recorded respectively at 5.30 am. Water logging was reported at Sion station which resulted in a delay of 5-7 minutes, according to Central Railways.

Western Railways have also said that the Uttar Pradesh line between Bhilad and Sanjan in Mumbai division was affected from 7.45 am. Western Railways however said suburban trains were running with no disruption, adding that a slight delay occurred due to low visibility.

According to Mumbai police, traffic slowed down at JVLR bridge, Vikhroli, Khar, Malad subway and Andheri subway due to water logging.

A wall fell on a 37-year-old woman in Wadala's Antop hill. The building was under construction, ANI reported. The building collapsed at around 4:45 am following heavy rains. The woman is admitted to a hospital. A complaint has been registered against the builder.

The number of rain-related deaths has increased to 4. After two deaths were reported to have occurred on Sunday and one death in Thane's Ambernath taluka, another death was reported in Mumbai's Malad area.

Milan, Khar subways open for commuters now: Mumbai police

A traffic update tweeted by Mumbai police said that the Milan Subway near Santacruz and Khar subway are now open. Both subways were closed a few hours earlier because of water logging, which Mumbai police said is still responsible for the slow movement of traffic.

Mumbai's Santacruz received 231 mm rain since yesterday.

The last time it had rained so heavily was in June 2015, when Mumbai received 283.4 mm of rainfall.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in 1991, when Mumbai received 399mm of rain in a single day.

The two weather systems responsible for heavy rain in Mumbai

The monsoon was stuck and had been in a weak phase since 13th June.

There is a cyclonic circulation over Gujarat and North Konkan and another one over northwest Bay of Bengal.

These two weather systems are the reason for heavy showers.

While rain is expected for the next 5 days, intensity will decrease by tomorrow.

"First extremely heavy rainfall recorded in current season": Weather Department chief

"The Santacruz weather station recorded 231.4 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. So much rainfall is categorised as extremely heavy showers," IMD Mumbai Director Ajay Kumar told PTI.

There was flooding in several Mumbai areas, according to news agency IANS. Chunabhatti, Wadala, Dadar, Malad, Kurla, Gamdevi and Santacruz-Chembur Link Road all faced flooding.

The Mumbai morning peak road traffic was badly hit as waterlogging was reported in some parts of the Eastern and Western Express Highways (EEH-WEH), according to an IANS report.

Main and arterial roads and many low-lying areas of the city and suburbs and traffic to and from adjoining Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts were affected by the waterlogging.

Traffic closed at Khar subway, Santacruz, diverted to Link Road: Mumbai police

Mumbai police has tweeted saying traffic has been closed off at Khar subway in Santacruz, due to waterlogging. Traffic has been diverted to Link road, according to Mumbai police.

Traffic on Western Express Highway slowed down after a tree fell at Mahananda Dairy near NESCO, tweeted Mumbai police. Traffic slowed down towards Girgaon Chowpatty as well after a tree fell at Krishna Sanghi Junction.

They also tweeted saying that a container broke down at JVLR bridge in Vikhroli, northbound near Eastern express highway, slowing traffic over there as well, according to Mumbai police.

Traffic is also moving slowly on SCLR Kurla in both directions because of water logging, according to Mumbai police.

Wall collapsed in South Mumbai's Antop Hill, Wadala

A major portion of a Lloyd Estates building compound wall collapsed in South Mumbai's Antop Hill, Wadala. No casualties have been reported from the incident. The collapse took with it 12 parked cars, while 5 more cars were left hanging on the cliff.

The BMC and fire department have vacated the entire C wing of the building, which houses senior lawyers, judged and businessmen.

According to private weather forecaster Skymet, rains have intensified in Mumbai's Chembur area.

The private weather agency also tweeted saying there was an instance of waterlogging in Mumbai's Kurla area.



According to Skymet, a radar image tweeted by them shows a 32 per cent cloud build up right over Mumbai.

Rains lashed Mumbai incessantly on Sunday. Malad (West) received the highest amount of rainfall at 110.80 mm between 8.30 am and 4.30 pm on Sunday, according to weather department officials. Powai received 77.80 mm rain and Mulund (West) received 76 mm rain.
