The doctor couple treated over a thousand patients in the first two days.

Aluva, Kerala:

As Kerala witnessed the worst monsoon in about a century, over 300 people died and several lakhs were left homeless. Intense rescue operations are underway and agencies are doing their best to help.

Individuals are also helping others within the limited resources available in the flood-hit state. A couple, both doctors, in Aluva district slept for 2-3 hours as they immersed themselves in providing treatment and arranging for patients.

"We thought we would collapse," Dr Najeeb told NDTV. He along with his wife helped bring evacuees to relief camp in Aluva, one of the worst affected districts in the state.

"Aluva was completely cut off from the rest of world due to severe flooding. In the beginning, we somehow managed to send two patients to another hospital. But later realised, it was impossible to do so with everyone. So we did what we could to help patients, but it was extremely tough. Later, more doctors joined us," 57-year-old Dr Najeeb said.

Dr Naseema Najeeb, his wife, said, "We treated over a thousand patients in the first two days. People who came here were psychologically frail and traumatised. Our focus was to prevent spread of diseases. In the beginning, availability of medicines was a problem, but the supply streamlined soon."

The camp in Aluva, largest in the state, is hosting around 3,000 people. It is being run mostly by young volunteers from surrounding areas.

"I work for a corporate company. My house is safe, but I had to help people around me. I thought if not now, then when?" Rose , a techie said.
