Ahead Of Hadiya's Testimony In Supreme Court, A New Controversy

Hadiya, meeting the National Commission for Women at her home last week, reported that she was safe.

Highlights

  • Hadiya's marriage to Muslim man annulled by Kerala High Court
  • It is being investigated by top counter-terror agency
  • Kerala Women's Commission not allowed to meet her at home
Thiruvananthapuram: 24-year-old Hadiya, whose marriage to a Muslim man is being examined by the country's top counter-terror agency, cannot meet the top women's rights body in Kerala, her father has said.

The Kerala Women's Commission has asked the police to talk to him and explain why he banned the consultation.

Last week, the National Commission for Women sent a team to visit Hadiya at her home and reported that she was safe and did not seem to have been subjected to any abuse.

Hadiya, who grew up as Akhila Ashokan, has been ordered to appear in the Supreme Court on the 27th to testify whether she married Shefin Jahan, a Muslim who returned to Kerala from the Middle East, of her own accord.

Her marriage was annulled in May by the Kerala High Court based on a petition by her father, Ashokan KM, who alleges that his son-in-law has links to ISIS and that there is a pattern in Kerala of terror groups recruiting young, vulnerable Hindu women through love and marriage. The High Court ordered Hadiya to return to live with her parents.

The National Investigation Agency was allowed in August by the Supreme Court to dissect Hadiya's marriage. She met her husband through an Islamist matrimonial site.

Before that, activist Rahul Easwar visited her and released a video in which she said, "Get me out of here. Today or tomorrow, I am going to die. I am sure about this. My father is getting angry, I can make out. He pushes me."
