Jaipur: Voting for students' union polls in government universities and colleges of Rajasthan began today. The counting of votes will take place on September 4.

Except the universities and government colleges in the Udaipur division, where the elections were postponed due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit tomorrow, all other universities and colleges went to polls today.

Voting will take place in Udaipur on September 4 and the results will be declared the same day, a higher education department spokesperson said.

There was a heavy deployment of police personnel at the Rajasthan University campus and its constituent colleges to ensure peaceful voting, the police said.

Rajasthan University has 23,651 registered voters, but identity cards for the polls have been issued to only 19,394 of them.

Nine student leaders are contesting for the post of students' union president in the Rajasthan University.

The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) candidate, Deepak Kumar Meena, has locked horns with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's (ABVP) Sanjay Machedi for the post of students' union president.

Mr Pawan Yadav, an ABVP dissident, has entered the fray as an Independent candidate.

Mr Rahul Bhakar, an NSUI dissident, is also contesting the polls.
