1 Dead In Violent Clashes In Jaipur, Curfew In Parts Of City

Jaipur: A man was killed and 11 people, including six policemen, were injured after a mob clashed with cops in Rajasthan's capital Jaipur late last night. There is curfew in some parts of the city and mobile internet services have been suspended in the walled city.

No violence has been reported since morning and five cases have been registered in connection with the clashes, police said.

"Situation in under control and we also conducted a flag march," a senior police official said, adding that "curfew will be relaxed or lifted only after reviewing the situation this evening."

"A petty dispute between a police constable and a motorcycle-borne couple late last night led to clashes between the locals and the police, following which the curfew was imposed around 1 am in Ramganj area, where the violence broke out," Jaipur Police Chief, Sanjay Agarwal said.

Locals alleged that the constable had assaulted the couple on Friday night over some issue, following which hundreds of people gathered at a police station in the area in protest and started throwing stones at the cops. The mob also set a transformer and several vehicles, including an ambulance, on fire. They also attacked journalists who had reached the spot, Jaipur Police Commissioner Sanjay Agarwal said.

The police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the mob, but when the situation went out of control, police had to open fire on the agitators in which one person was killed, he said.

"A curfew has been imposed till further orders in Manak Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Galta Gate and Ramganj police station areas of the city," he said.

The Delhi-Agra road through Jaipur has also been diverted.

Security forces, including Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) and home guard jawans, have been deployed in violence-hit areas, police said.
