A farmer committed suicide in Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, the home constituency of Chief Minister Kamal Nath. Akadu Uike, a resident of Meghasiwni village, was found hanging from a shed in his field this morning.

His wife said he had borrowed Rs 9,000 from a local moneylender for their daughter's wedding and was unable to repay it.

The family had suffered crop failure for the last four years and he had been upset about the matter was weeks, Akadu Uike's wife Sakalbati said.

"I was okay with the loan. We have a son, he is smart, studies well. I thought the loan will be repaid eventually. The money lender had not also asked me to pay anything yet," she added.

Since coming to power last year, the Congress government led by Kamal Nath has waived farm loans - a pre-election promise of the party. Unpaid farm loan had been behind several suicides in the state over the recent years and farm loan waiver had been one of the key promises of the party.

Asked if they have not received any help from the government, Sakalbati said, "We don't know how to go about it. We have never gone anywhere."

The farmer's son, Naresh Uike said they had not taken any loan from any bank.

The police said the matter is under investigation and the body has been sent for postmortem.

Chhindwara goes to polls on April 29 in the fourth phase of the election.
