Narendra Modi Oath Ceremony 2019 took place at Rashtrapati Bhawan

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took his oath of office today, along with his ministers, for the second consecutive term at the Rashtrapati Bhawan after his party BJP witnessed a massive victory in the recently-concluded national elections. PM Modi and his council of ministers were administered the oath by President Ram Nath Kovind. The dazzling oath-taking event was held at the presidential palace Rashtrapati Bhavan and was attended by world leaders, celebrities and politicians.

Congress's Sonia Gandhi and party chief Rahul Gandhi were present for the swearing in. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was also present.

BJP President Amit Shah has also joined PM Modi's cabinet. Amit Shah, who has led the party since 2014 and is credited with its spectacular run in elections, has been the PM Modi's confidant for over two decades. He is credited with managing the party's successful poll campaign.

Ahead of the glittering swearing-in ceremony, PM Modi visited the memorials of Mahatma Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, where he paid tributes to the late leaders.

A record number of nearly 8,000 guests were said to be at PM Modi's swearing-in ceremony. The guest list included heads of several neighbouring countries, chief ministers of most of the states and Bollywood stars. The families of BJP workers who were allegedly killed in political violence in West Bengal in the last one year were also invited to the ceremony.

Here are the highlights of the PM Modi's swearing-in ceremony:

Som Parkash takes oath as Minister of State at the Rashtrapati Bhavan

A former IAS officer in Punjab and two-time MLA from the Phagwara Assembly constituency, Som Parkash is a first-time MP elected from the Hoshiarpur (SC) constituency

A prominent Dalit face in Punjab's Doaba region, Som Parkash defeated Congress nominee and legislator Raj Kumar Chabbewal from Hoshiarpur by just 48,530 votes.

The BJP had benched its sitting MP Vijay Sampla and fielded Parkash from the constituency.

Mr Parkash, who had taken premature retirement from the IAS to join the BJP, had unsuccessfully fought from the Hoshiarpur seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. He had lost by a very thin margin.

The former bureaucrat had contested the 2012 Assembly polls from the Phagwara seat on a BJP ticket and won. He was re-elected from the seat in the 2017 assembly election.

Mr Parkash shared a strained relationship with Sampla, who as the Punjab BJP chief had opposed his candidature for the 2017 assembly polls. But he turned out to be among the three BJP candidates who won the election.

In February this year, he had raised concerns in the state Assembly over the rising cases of superstition, especially among women, in Punjab and sought effective steps to curb them.
Mr Parkash, who was born in April 1949, is an MA (Economics) from the Panjab University, Chandigarh.

He had started his career as a research officer in the Punjab State Planning Board in 1972. Thereafter, he became an excise and taxation officer in the Punjab Excise Department.

Mr Parkash has served as the deputy commissioner of Faridkot, Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar and has also held posts like the labour commissioner, Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) chief administrator, managing director of the Punjab Financial Corporation and director of the Social Security Department.

G Kishan Reddy takes oath as Minister of State at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

BJP MP from Telangana G Kishan Reddy, who was sworn-in as a Minister of State, is a leader who rose through the ranks.

The BJP leader won the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat in Telangana by a comfortable margin.

Mr Reddy, who started his political career in 1977 as an ordinary worker with the Janata Party, had served as president of BJP in undivided Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and also as national president of BJYM, BJP's youth wing.

He also functioned as the party's floor leader of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Born in 1960 in neighbouring Ranga Reddy district, Kishan Reddy was inspired by Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan and RSS leaders before he plunged into public service.

After working with Janata Party as an activist, he joined the BJP when it was formed in 1980.
Mr Reddy's growth in the saffron party was gradual and he was appointed  as the president of BJYM in 2002 when the party was in power at the Centre.

Mr Reddy formed the World Youth Council Against Terrorism (WYCAT), an apolitical organisation, when he was the president of BJYM.

He organised a World Youth Convention under the auspices of WYCAT in New Delhi in which delegates from over 50 countries participated.

He conducted a ''Seema Suraksha Jagran Yatra'' with the objective of expressing solidarity with the people living in border areas.

Mr Reddy contested Assembly polls for the first time in 2004 (from Himayatnagar in Hyderabad) and got elected. His work won him laurels though he was the only MLA for his party then.

After delimitation of constituencies, he was subsequently elected to the Assembly from Amberpet constituency in the city in 2009 and 2014.

He, however, lost the Assembly elections held in December 2018, the first in Telangana after its formation.

With sitting Lok Sabha member and former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya being denied the ticket, Kishan Reddy was chosen by the party to contest from Secunderabad in the recent held Lok Sabha polls.

Mr Reddy also worked for social causes, including well being of children suffering from heart ailments. His effort, along with others, made the then government to come up with a scheme to help such children.

He headed the Telangana Home Guards Association and undertook agitations, seeking equal treatment, respect and improvement in their living conditions.
