Patna: The role of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence or ISI is being suspected in the train accident in Kanpur in November after the arrest in Bihar of three men yesterday. 150 people were killed when 14 coaches of the Indore-Patna Express rolled off the tracks around 100 km from Kanpur on November 20. At the time, a fault in the tracks was thought to be the cause of the accident. The three arrested yesterday have allegedly told the police that they were working for the Pakistani intelligence agency to target Indian railways.

Here are the latest developments in the story:

  1. The man behind the Kanpur train accident is believed to be a man called Shamsul Hoda, who stays in Delhi, and Brajkishore Giri, a resident of Nepal.

  2. On Hoda's order, Brajkishore Giri and a few other men allegedly planted IEDs on the track which the Indore Patna Express was to take, and also used gas cutters to damage it.

  3. Shamsul Hoda is allegedly linked to the ISI.

  4. His role was allegedly corroborated by three men arrested in Bihar - Moti Paswan, Uma Shankar Patel and Mukesh Yadav. These men were paid by Brajkishore Giri.

  5. They were arrested in connection with the murder of two young men in Motihari around 150 km from Patna.

  6. Sources say Moti Paswan "confessed" that the men, Arun and Deepak Ram, were killed on October 1 by Brajkishore Giri because they had failed to trigger bombs on railway tracks in Champaram near the Nepal border as planned, and backed out at the last minute when a passenger train was passing.

  7. That bombing was allegedly also ordered by Shamsul Hoda, who reportedly paid around 20-25 lakhs for it.

  8. Moti Paswan has allegedly told the police that a furious Hoda ordered the killing of Arun and Deepak Ram for failing him and asked for their murders to be filmed and sent to him.

  9. The Bihar police say during their interrogation, the arrested men have provided "positive leads" about the train accident, which have been conveyed to central agencies.

  10. In the Kanpur accident, most of the train's coaches were smashed as they tumbled off the track one after the other, some left on their side.
