Overnight Anti-Terror Ops Continue In Nagaland's Mon District, Says Army

The Army said the encounter has been on since last night in Mon, Nagaland.

An encounter took place between the army and terrorists in Mon district of Nagaland last night. There has been no casualty, the army has said.

Yesterday, the army and Assam rifles personnel had laid an ambush in Abhoi in Mon district after receiving specific inputs about the presence of suspected terrorists in the area, sources said. Around 10 in the evening, as the terrorists appeared, a gun-battle had started. The terrorists fled and a cordon and search operation was conducted in the area but was called off in the morning.

The terrorists reportedly fled into the jungle taking advantage of the darkness, sources said.

On June 7, another encounter had taken place in the same district, located nearly 350 km from state capital Kohima. An Army Major had been killed in the encounter. Three terrorists of the NSCN-K (Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland, Khaplang) had also been killed.

Mon district, lying close to the India-Myanmar border, is a stronghold of terrorists. Not just Naga terror groups, but those from Manipur and Assam also use the area as a transit zone to slip through the porous border to access their bases in Myanmar.
