Rahul Gandhi responds to Sushma Swaraj in Parliament

Following are the highlights of Rahul Gandhi's address in Parliament:

  • Our PM had said 'na khaunga na khaane dunga,' but today he does not have the guts to sit in this chair.
  • PM is not here because he does not have the guts to face the House.
  • Sushma Swaraj is the first humanitarian who does humanitarian work secretly.
  • PM should speak here; the country wants to hear what he has to say.
  • Lalit Modi is a symbol of black money, tell us how he benefitted from this transaction.
  • Gandhi ji ke 3 bandar kehte hain - Bura mat dekho, bura mat suno, bura mat bolo. (Gandhi ji's 3 monkey's used to say... see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil).
  • The country wants to know why Lalit Modi is being saved.

'I have done no wrong,' says Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj amid slogan-shouting by Opposition during discussion on Lalitgate

  • It is not admission, what I said was that if helping a woman who is a citizen of India, has cancer, is not a criminal with no case against her and going to Portugal for an operation... If helping her is a crime, I accept it. They are calling that an admission of guilt.
  • Lalit Modi's travel documents was not in my purview
  • My husband was not a lawyer in Lalit Modi's passport case... My daughter was a junior, in the ninth position... There were a total of 11 lawyers... My daughter appeared with a senior lawyer
  • I will tell you what conflict of interest is... it is when P Chidambaram is the Finance Minister and his wife Nalini is appointed a lawyer by his department in the Saradha scam case
  • Rahul Gandhi says Sushma Swaraj acted in a clandestine manner... did a criminal act, helped an absconder... He (Lalit Modi) is not an absconder, no court has termed him that... If someone had done something clandestinely, it is their government which helped Ottavio Quattrocchi and Warren Anderson get away
  • I want to tell Rahul Gandhi, you love going on vacations. On your next vacation, when you are alone, read the history of your family and come back and ask 'Mumma, how much money did we get in the Quattrocchi incident?'
  • The Enforcement Directorate did nothing about Lalit Modi when the UPA government was in power. There was no action taken for four years.
  • I have been in politics for 38 years now... my reputation is spotless... the Congress is guilty, not me

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge's speaks during Lalitgate discussion:

  • On what basis did Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj help Lalit Modi, we want to know
  • Humanitarian law and humanitarian grounds not the same... Due process of law should have been followed
  • 'To say that I helped Lalit Modi under humanitarian grounds is wrong... it points towards a deep relationship between you and him,' Mr Kharge targets Sushma Swaraj
  • Sushma Swaraj gave a statement here that she did not give any letter... But what about the fact that you got him (Lalit Modi) travel documents... What about the fact that you told the British government that there would be no fallout back in India if Lalit Modi were granted travel documents
  • Did you want to shield someone who committed a 460-crore fraud on so-called humanitarian grounds?
  • The British government refused to give travel documents on July 3, 2014; these orders were sent to his (Lalit Modi) lawyers... You re-initiated this process... Keith Vaz forwarded your request
  • Is it not a recommendation when you (Sushma Swaraj) say that it (giving travel documents to Lalit Modi) won't affect relationship between India and the UK?
  • Did the PM or you or Arun Jaitley decide not to appeal against relief to Lalit Modi in his passport case?
  • There's something in your silence as well as the PM's over not appealing against the court restoring Lalit Modi's passport

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is addressing the Lok Sabha on the Lalit Modi Controversy.

Here is what she has said:

  • I'm not taking advantage of the opposition's absence to make this statement in my defence.
  • For 2 weeks, there's been a misinformation campaign against me.
  • Almost 3 weeks are up and I don't see any chance of a debate.
  • Injustice if I'm not allowed to explain myself.
  • Luck not in my favour else those who have always supported me are demanding my resignation. Stars will turn.
  • All allegations against me are false.
  • I never requested British to favour Lalit Modi for travel documents. Words in such form of communication are important.
  • Had I requested the British in favour of Lalit Modi, I would have written that documents should be given.
  • Lalit Modi's wife has had cancer for 17 years.
  • She was undergoing treatment, and the doctors had required her presence as well as her husband's to make certain decisions on critical treatment, which could or could not lead to death.
  • She had no complaints against her. She had not committed any crimes. There were no investigations.
  • For reasons could help be refused to such a woman, an Indian citizen, faced with circumstances such as these?
  • I ask you, what should I have done?
  • I ask Sonia Gandhi, what she would have done?
