Heavy rains continued to hit Mumbai and adjoining suburbs today, leading to water-logging in several areas. Water-logging on railway tracks disrupted the suburban train services to some extent, as locals were running behind schedule by around 15 minutes, news agency Press Trust of India said, as suburban trains are running with "cautious speed". Flight operations at the Mumbai airport, however, were not impacted due to rains, an airport official said. The India Meteorological Department issued a warning of heavy rainfall in Mumbai on Saturday along with a high tide. It also said that the weather conditions along the west coast would remain cold and wet. The weather department had on Friday predicted intense heavy rainfall in Mumbai on Saturday and Sunday due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has issued a "beach safety appeal" to the residents of the Mumbai due to the weather conditions. "We appeal citizens to avoid venturing near sea or walking in water logged areas. In any emergency call us on 1916," the official said.

Diversion in Thane commissionerate area due to rains
  • Traffic from Kalyan to Murbad is diverted from Ambivali-Titwala road.
  • Traffic from Rajnoli to Bhiwandi via Saibaba temple is diverted from Rajnoli-Sonai-Bhiwandi.

Several villages in Palghar district marooned as roads were flooded
  • In Palghar district, several villages were marooned as the roads connecting them were flooded.
  • Some of the important roads in the district have been shut for traffic due to flooding.
  • The gates of the Surya dam were opened releasing the excess water, officials said.
  • Palghar District Collector Kailas Shinde said the weather department has forecast heavy rains on Saturday and Sunday.
  • "Considering the heavy rainfall warning, people are advised to remain indoors and get out of the house only if it is absolutely necessary. People should not go near the flooded roads, bridges, river," he said.
  • He said a holiday has been declared for all the educational institutions in the district.
  • In case of any emergency the citizens are requested to get in touch with the disaster control room at the district headquarters, Shinde said.

Downpour in Thane claims 1 life, holiday for educational institutions in Palghar
  • One person was electrocuted as heavy rains battered Thane district, disrupting normal life due to water-logging and flooding in some parts, as reported by PTI.
  • Another person suffered serious injuries after the roof of a bakery in Mumbra caved in, officials said.
  • Incessant downpour continued in Palghar district, prompting the authorities to declare a holiday for educational institutions on Saturday and also issue an advisory asking people to stay indoors.
  • Due to the heavy rainfall overnight in Thane, roads, nullahs and even housing societies were flooded. 
  • The gushing water swept away vehicles in some areas.
  • The low-lying areas in the city were affected the most as several housing complexes in such areas were flooded.
  • Schools in Thane declared a holiday due to heavy rains. Buses and autos were not plying on the roads due to flooding, which incovenienced the commuters, the officials said.

  • "Overnight heavy rains in Mumbai and its adjoining areas has led to water-logging at some places, which has affected the flow of traffic, especially in parts of Malad, Andheri and Dahisar," a senior official of the said. 
  • "We appeal citizens to avoid venturing near sea or walking in water logged areas. In any emergency call us on 1916," BMC said.
  • As per the fire station-wise rainfall recorded by the BMC in the 24 hours ending 8 am on Saturday, Dindoshi received 50 mm rainfall, followed by Kandivali (41 mm), Malad (36 mm), Chincholi (34 mm), Goregaon (33 mm), Bhandup (31 mm), Borivali (29 mm), Malwani (26 mm), Mulund (20 mm), Vikhroli (11 mm) and Kurla (9 mm).

    Parts of Mumbai and adjoining areas water-logged
    • Many parts of Mumbai and its adjoining areas recorded heavy rains overnight. This has led to waterlogging in many areas including Goregaon, Kandivali and Dahisar.
    • Flight services at the Mumbai airport have largely been unaffected so far.
    • Mumbai's municipal body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has meanwhile warned citizens to avoid the sea following the possibility of a high tide which is expected to hit the city later today. 
    • KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, India Met Department, Mumbai, tweeted, that the 4.90 metre tide expected to hit this afternoon will be the "highest high tide of the four monsoon months". 
    • He said that intense rainfall will continue in north Konkan areas including Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for next 4-6 hours.
