Severe cyclonic storm Vayu is likely to hit Gujarat on June 12 night with a wind speed of 130-140 kilometres per hour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. It is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then turn into a severe cyclonic storm in the subsequent 24 hours.With the warning of a heavy rainfall in parts of Gujarat, the state government has decided to deploy NDRF personnel in coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch.    

The government will also put the Army, the Navy and the Coast Guard on alert. IMD has issued a warning of heavy rains with winds blowing at the speed of over 110 kms on June 13 and 14 in coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch.

The entire Gujarat coastline was today put on "high alert" after cyclonic storm Vayu intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said people living in the entire coastal belt of the state would be shifted to safer areas. Vayu, which is set to hit the Gujarat coast on Thursday, is currently said to be around 630 km south of Gujarat's Veraval, according to the India Meteorological Department or IMD. Severe cyclonic storm Vayu would hit the Gujarat coast with a wind speed of 110-120 kmph, according to a weather department official, quoted by news agency PTI.

Cyclone Vayu: Authorities prep to evacuate 300,000 in Gujarat: news agency Reuters

Authorities are preparing to evacuate 300,000 people along the western coast as a severe cyclone is expected to make landfall on Thursday morning in Gujarat, reported news agency Reuters.

Storm Vayu, which formed in the Arabian Sea, is likely to cross the Gujarat coast with gust speeds as high as 135 kmph (84 mph), the India Meteorological Department said in a statement.

Vayu currently moving at speed of 540 kmph south-west of Mumbai: news agency ANI

The cyclone Vayu is expected to reach the city's latitude on Wednesday morning, leading to extreme weather and rain, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday, reported news agency ANI.

"The cyclone is expected to hit between Porbandar and Veraval in Gujarat on the morning of June 13. It will be a severe cyclonic storm with wind gusting at the speed of 135 Kmph," KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General, Meteorology was quoted as saying by ANI.

Mr Hosalikar said the cyclone is expected to reach Mumbai's latitude on Wednesday morning. "The Cyclone is currently moving at the speed of 540 Kmph south-west of Mumbai," he said.

Vayu likely to make landfall at Gujarat's Veraval between 6-7 am on Wednesday: Gujarat Chief Secretary

Gujarat Chief Secretary JN Singh told reporters in Gandhinagar that going by information from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone was likely to make a landfall near Veraval between 6 am and 7 am on Wednesday.

"It would be anywhere between Veraval and Mahuva (in Saurashtra region), but most probably it would be near Veraval in Gir-Somnath district," he was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.

Vayu: "Very likely" for cyclonic storm Vayu to cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuya as severe cyclonic storm, says weather department bulletin: news agency PTI

"It is very likely to move nearly northward and cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Veraval and Diu region as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed 110-120 kilometres per hour gusting to 135 kilometres per hour during early morning of June 13," a weather department bulletin said.

Jayanta Sarkar, IMD Ahmedabad Director was quoted as saying by news agency ANI: "The cyclone is likely to cross the Saurashtra coast as a severe cyclonic storm. We have issued a warning for fishermen and signal number 2 that is warning for ships leaving the port."

Cyclonic Storm ''Vayu'', that is likely to hit Gujarat on June 13, continues to move in Northerly direction and will presumably intensify into Severe Cyclonic Storm in next 12 hours, India Meteorological Office (IMD) said on Tuesday.

"It is very likely to intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours. It is very likely to move nearly northwards and cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Veraval and Diu region as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph during the early morning of June 13," the IMD said in a statement.

Cyclone Vayu: Amit Shah reviews preparations as cyclone set to make landfall

Home Minister Amit Shah Tuesday reviewed the preparations for cyclone Vayu which is expected to make a landfall in Gujarat, and directed officials to ensure all possible steps for the safety of people, officials said, according to news agency PTI.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has pre-positioned 26 teams, comprising about 45 personnel each, and the rescuers are equipped with boats, tree-cutters, telecom equipments, reported PTI.

The NDRF is also moving another 10 teams as requested by the Gujarat government.

After review, the Home minister directed the senior officials to take every possible measure to ensure that people are safely evacuated.

He also told them to ensure maintenance of all essential services such as power, telecommunications, health, drinking water and their immediate restoration in the event of damages caused to them, a Home Ministry official said.

Cyclone likely 300 km off Maharashtra coast on June 11-12: Indian Meteorological Department
  • A cyclone is likely in the Arabian Sea some 300 kilometres off the country's west coast between June 11-12, a Maharashtra government advisory. 
  • The cyclone will not be hitting the state. It will, however, result in gusty winds and a turbulent sea.
  • Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea.
  • Monsoon is expected to arrive in Konkan and Mumbai regions during this period.
  • The Maharashtra government has also asked farmers not to rush into sowing as the onset of the south west monsoon has been delayed. After the early showers, the soil needs time to be ready for germination.

  • There was no relief from the heatwave conditions in north and central regions of India even as monsoon advanced in Kerala on Sunday. 
  • The weather office warned that heatwave conditions will prevail in north and central India next week, and predicted "severe heatwave" in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan over the next two days.
  • On Sunday, Sri Ganganagar in western Rajasthan was the hottest place in the country at 48.5 degrees Celsius, while Churu and Kota districts of the state followed close behind, recording a maximum temperature of 48.3 degrees Celsius each.

Dust storm forecast in afternoon in Delhi: Weather Office
  • A dust storm is expected to hit Delhi today afternoon, weather officials said, as the city witnessed a cloudy sky in the morning. 
  • The minimum temperature was recorded at 30.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average.
  • Weather Office officials said, traces of rain were recorded in South Delhi's Greater Kailash area.
  • On Monday, Delhi witnessed its hottest June, with mercury soaring to 48 degrees Celsius in Palam area.
  • Thunderstorm with light rainfall or very light rainfall has been forecast for areas in north-west Delhi and south-west Delhi.
