Coronavirus Live Updates: India on Tuesday crossed 2 lakh cases of coronavirus -- roughly 15 days after it crossed the one lakh mark. For the last three days, the country has been reporting more than 8,000 infections a day.

India is now the seventh-worst hit nation by the COVID-19 pandemic after the US, Brazil, Russia, the UK, Spain and Italy, according to the WHO's coronavirus tracker.

Italy, with 2.33 lakh cases is in the sixth slot. The US with more than 18 lakh cases, is the nation worst hit by the virus, followed by Brazil, with more than 5.2 lakh. Among the states, Maharashtra remains the nation's coronavirus hotspot with more than 70,000 cases.

Coronavirus News: Anti-Malaria Drug Hydroxychloroquine's Coronavirus Trials To Resume, Says WHO
The World Health Organization announced Wednesday that clinical trials of the drug hydroxychloroquine will resume as it searches for potential coronavirus treatments.

On May 25, the WHO announced it had temporarily suspended the trials to conduct a safety review, which has now concluded there is "no reason" to change the way the trials are conducted.

The UN health agency's decision came after a study published in The Lancet medical journal suggesting the drug could increase the risk of death among COVID-19 patients. Read

Maharashtra Records Highest Single-Day Spike In Coronavirus Deaths
Maharashtra reported the highest single-day spike in coronavirus deaths today with 122 fatalities, taking the total number of deaths in the state to 2,587. The total number of positive cases in the state now stands at 74,860.

The state - home to India's financial and entertainment capital Mumbai - has been the worst hit in the country and accounts for over a third of India's total coronavirus cases. Mumbai alone reported 1,276 cases today and accounted for 49 of the 122 deaths. The total number of deaths in the financial capital is now 1,417.

The death count in Pune reached 378 as 11 people died due to the infection in 24 hours - the highest single-day spike for the city.

Over 8,800 coronavirus cases reported in UP

A coronavirus patient died while 141 more infection cases surfaced, taking the Uttar Pradesh's COVID-19 case count to 8,870 today.

According to a health bulletin, the fresh death was reported from Mau.

So far, 230 people have died of the infection in the state, with the maximum 45 deaths taking place in Agra.

WHO says hydroxychloroquine coronavirus trials to resume

The World Health Organization said that clinical trials of the drug hydroxychloroquine will resume, having been suspended pending a safety review in the search for coronavirus treatments.

"On the basis of the available mortality data... the executive group will communicate with the principal investigators in the trial about resuming the hydroxychloroquine arm," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual news briefing.

Over 1,800 COVID-19 cases reported in Gujarat, death count reaches to 1,222

The COVID-19 case count in Gujarat went up to 18,117 today after 485 new cases were reported in the state, while the death count rose to 1,122 as 30 more people died due to the infection, the health department said.

The state reported recovery of 318 patients today, which took the number of discharged persons to 12,212, it said. The state has achieved the recovery rate of 67.4 per cent so far, the department said.

Over 8,500 COVID-19 cases in Madhya Pradesh, death count reaches 371

Madhya Pradesh today reported 168 new COVID-19 cases and seven deaths, taking the case count to 8,588 and death count to 371, health officials said.

So far, 5,445 persons have recovered from the infection in the state while there are 2,772 active cases.

Three people from Indore and one each from Khandwa, Neemuch, Sagar and Sehore died due to COVID-19.

Timely action kept coronavirus number down: UP Chief Minister

Claiming that timely action by his government kept the number of coronavirus infections down, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said despite higher estimates by experts, the state has only around 3,000 active cases now.

"The state has reported around 8,000 cases so far. Of these, around 5,000 people have recovered and gone home, leaving behind about 3,000 active cases," he said.

He said alertness and awareness about the pandemic has kept the figures down.

UN accuses Asian countries of censorship during pandemic

The UN rights chief warned that China and other Asian countries were using the coronavirus crisis as an excuse to clamp down on free expression and tighten censorship.

In a statement, Michelle Bachelet expressed alarm over how censorship had been tightened in several countries, along with arbitrary arrests and detention of people who criticise their government's response, or even who simply share information or views on the pandemic. 

"Arrests for expressing discontent or allegedly spreading false information through the press and social media, have been reported in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam," the statement said.

Will consider restarting international flights when situation "normalises": Minister

Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today said that the Central government will consider restarting international flights as soon as the COVID-19 situation "normalises a bit" and poses no threat to people.

"We are continuously monitoring the situation and will consider restarting international flights as soon as the situation normalises a bit and poses no danger to our citizens. We will also have to consider that countries, where we intend to fly, are open to incoming foreign citizens," Mr Puri said in a series of tweets.

Germany to lift travel ban in Europe from June 15

Germany will lift a travel ban for European Union member states plus Britain, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland from 15 June as long as there are no entry bans or large-scale lockdowns in those countries, the foreign minister said.

The minister said all countries concerned met those criteria except Norway due to an entry ban and Spain, where he said parliament was deciding whether to extend an entry ban.

40 people from containment zone in Goa test positive for coronavirus

Around 40 people from a COVID-19 containment zone in Goa tested positive for coronavirus today, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said.

"Local transmission" of the virus has happened due to the fault of one family residing in the locality, he said.

With this, the number of active COVID-19 cases in the state has reached 65, the chief minister said.

The family members consulted a private medical practitioner after developing COVID-19 symptoms, he said. "They should have gone to a coronavirus testing centre," the chief minister added.

Coronavirus news: 55-year-old woman becomes second COVID-19 casualty in Chhattisgarh

A 55-year-old woman from Chhattisgarh's Durg district, tested positive for COVID-19 post her death at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Raipur), a health official said on Wednesday.

This is the second COVID-19 death in the state, which has recorded 572 cases so far, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: 143 more COVID-19 cases in Odisha

143 more COVID-19 cases have been reported from Odisha, said the state Health Department. With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state has reached 2,388.

With 80 more recoveries, the total number of recoveries in the state has reached 1,325 recoveries. The deaths due to COVID-19 in the state is seven, two people have died due to other causes.

The total number includes 1,054 active cases. A total of 132 people are in quarantine, as per the Health Department, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: Migrant worker tests COVID-19 positive in Shamli, active cases 10

A migrant worker who recently returned from Noida tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Shamli, taking the number of cases in the Uttar Pradesh district to 39 on Wednesday, an official said.

The active cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) rose to 10 after the driver, who was quarantined at Sakoti village, tested positive for the infection, District Magistrate Jasjit Kaur said.

The patient has been shifted to a COVID hospital in Jhinjhana town. 

Twenty-nine out of the 39 patients have recovered, PTI reported.
