Mumbai: Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi's lawyer has alleged that fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari issued him death threats over phone, asking him to stop fighting the cases of the disgraced cricket administrator, police said today.

The lawyer Mehmood Abdi submitted a written request to Oshiwara Police yesterday, in which he sought police protection in view of the threats.

According to Mr Abdi's letter, the fugitive gangster called him and said he was calling from Australia. The gangster then warned that Mr Abdi should stop fighting Lalit Modi's cases.

"Pujari threatened to eliminate me or harm my family if I don't follow his instructions," the lawyer said in the letter.

Oshiwara police is investigating the case.

A number of cases of financial irregularities, money laundering and criminal cases have been filed against Lalit Modi by various investigative agencies in the country.
