  • You can be in the company of friends and family, keep self busy and divert attention so as to not feel hungry.
  • You can also spend quality time with self, think it as a detox day and just unwind, read, relax.
  • Most importantly, have fun as you dress up for the special day.

Karva Chauth Vrat Katha:

Long time ago, Veeravati observed her first Karwa Chauth after her marriage. Unable to bear the hunger, she fainted on the ground. Upon seeing her condition, her 7 brothers decided to play up a trick so that their sister breaks the fast. One of the brothers climbed on the distant tree with sieve and lamp. When Veeravati gained the consciousness, her brothers told her that the moon has risen. Using the lamp-and-sieve trick by her brother, she broke her fast. But since she did not offer argha to the real moon, her husband did not survive.

She was inconsolable after her husband's death. Goddess Indrani appeared when she was mourning and told her to observe Chauth vrat every month till the following Karwa Chauth vrat; her husband will be alive and back if she observes this devotedly. When Veervati followed all the rituals with devotion, her husband came back to life.

How to break Karva Chauth fast

When the moon rises, the husband and wife go to the terrace or the balcony from where the moon is visible. The wife first sees the moon using a sieve and then looks at her husband from the same sieve and prays for her well-being and long life. Some women also light up a small diya or lamp and place it on the sieve while performing this ritual. Looking at the moon first is symbolic of the fact that the women want the qualities of moon - long life, calmness, peace, beauty - to be imbibed in her husband too.

After the moon-sighting ritual, the husband offers water to the wife and that's how the fast is broken. The two then enjoy their dinner together and with other family members.

Happy Karwa Chauth!
