New Delhi: The number of coronavirus cases across the country increased by 146 over the last 24 hours, bringing up the total number of cases a shade short of 1,400. The data from the health ministry included 124 people who were cured and the 35 who died. But it did not include the huge spurt in cases that came from following a religious event in Delhi held earlier this month. As thousands of people who attended it spread across the country, data from the states indicated that the event added nearly 100 cases to the total today. Hundreds of people are yet to be traced and tested. Mumbai showed a massive jump in coronavirus cases, with 59 positive reports today. Maharashtra became the second state today after Telangana to cut salaries of its employees.

  1. Maharashtra announced a cut in salaries for government employees under which the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Cabinet ministers will take a 60% pay cut.  The deduction, however, would not apply to those involved in essential services.

  2. The data from Mumbai showed a spurt after figures from private laboratories, compiled over three days, were  factored in. The total number of cases in Maharashtra is 302, of whom nearly 40 people have recovered and 10 died. In Delhi, 23 people tested positive over 24 hours, bringing the total to 120.

  3. Amid a huge crunch of protective gear for medical personnel treating COVID-19 patients, India exported 90 tons of medical equipment and safety gear to Serbia. The matter was discovered after a tweet from the Serbian wing of UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) which is the providing support to coronavirus-effected nations. The health ministry denied any knowledge of the matter.

  4. Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin Markaz --  a building used for prayers and gatherings - was declared a virus "hotspot" by the Centre today after 95 people attending a gathering there tested positive for COVID-19.  The biggest number came from Tamil Nadu, where 50 people tested positive.

  5. More than 400 people have shown symptoms of the disease and more than 1,400 members of Tablighi Jamaat - the religious group that organized the event earlier this month -- have been quarantined.

  6. A search is on across multiple states - including Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh - for people who  attended the Delhi religious event.

  7. The Supreme Court told the Centre today that migrants who were stopped on their long journey home and sent to shelters amid the coronavirus lockdown, should get food, medical aid and counselling from leaders of all religions. "We want to impress upon you that the panic will destroy more lives than the virus," the court said while hearing a petition that asked for adequate arrangements for the migrants.

  8. Today, the Centre said more than 21,000 facilities have been prepared across the states to accommodate around 6 lakh migrant workers. Besides, food is being distributed to the needy from 23 lakh spots in the country. 

  9. In Goa, where people did not have access to food or water for several days, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said he held meeting with wholesalers to streamline grocery supply. The cattle feed problems have also been solved, he said.

  10. The Goa Chief Minister also said around 7,000 to 8,000 seafarers have been stuck on ships. The government trying to resolve their issue and will take a decision within two days.
