Haryana Election Results 2019 Highlights: Hung Assembly In State, Bhupinder Hooda Wins From His Stronghold

Haryana Vidhan Sabha Election Result: Bhupinder Hooda is leading from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi Assembly seat.

New Delhi:

The Haryana Assembly poll verdict threw up a hung House, with no party reaching the majority figures. The BJP is leading on 40 seats in the 90-member Haryana assembly, where the majority mark is at 46. The Congress is leading on 31 seats. Jat leader Dushyant Chautala's Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) could emerge as a possible kingmaker. Manohar Lal Khattar will meet the Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya today to stake claim to form government in the state, sources have said. The less than 12-month-old Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which broke away from the state's once major regional Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) owing to family disputes, won 10 seats.

The BJP chief in Haryana, Subhash Barala, who lost to his rival from the JJP in Tohana assembly seat, denied reports that he had offered to step down after the party's lower than expected performance - it has been struggling to even touch the majority mark of 46 in the 90-seat assembly.

BJP chief Amit Shah gave his "thanks" to the people of Haryana for ensuring the BJP remained the single-largest party in the northern state. All the party's state ministers, except two, lost the polls, including Anil Vij and party chief Subhash Barala.

High praise went to the BJP team in Haryana from Prime Minister Narendra Modi too. "People who know Haryana politics, they must know if we had to form an alliance with a party in the state, we had to fight on seats of their choice. This was a condition before 2014. It would be a big deal if we even touched double digits... To come from there to where we are today is remarkable," PM Modi said.

The INLD won a lone seat against 19 in 2014 Assembly election. Eight independents have also won.

While Khattar retained his Karnal seat with a comfortable margin, two-time Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda too managed to win in his bastion of Garhi Sampla-Kiloi in Rohtak district.

PM Modi thanks Maharashtra and Haryana

I thank the people for the faith they have shown in our governments in both the states. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Manohar Lal Khattar were never even ministers anywhere before. But they took everyone along and for five years, they served Maharashtra and Haryana with honesty, for welfare of the people. The coming five years will see both the states scale new heights of development.

"I have worked for many years in Haryana for the party. Whenever we partnered with any party there, it had to be on their terms and conditions. It would be a big deal if we even touched double digits. And this is just 2014 I am talking about. To come from there to where we are today is remarkable. No praise is enough for the BJP team in Haryana," the PM says.

The vote share of the ruling BJP fell by a massive 22 per cent in the Haryana Assembly polls, after the party secured over 58 per cent votes in the state in the Lok Sabha polls held in April-May and won all the 10 seats.

A number of ministers in the Manohar Lal Khattar-led government lost, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had coined the slogan "Abki Baar 75 paar" (this time we will cross 75 seats), appeared to be falling well short of the majority mark of 46 in the 90-member House.

Latest Election Commission (EC) trends said the saffron party had won or was leading in 40 seats. It had won 47 seats in the 2014 Haryana Assembly polls.

According to the latest data available on the EC website, the BJP got 36.3 per cent votes.

The vote share of the Congress, which has emerged stronger than the last polls but is behind the BJP, is almost the same as it was in the Lok Sabha polls. The party got 28.42 per cent of the total votes polled in the Lok Sabha election, while in the Assembly polls, it has secured 28.2 per cent votes and 33 seats.

Haryana Results 2019 - Caste politics hurt BJP in Haryana: Party leader

Senior BJP leader Arun Singh said that caste politics unleashed during campaigning in Haryana has hurt the BJP prospects.

"They indulged in caste politics. Ofcourse it has hurt us to some extent," said Mr Singh, who is the BJP general secretary. But he added, BJP will form the Government in Haryana nevertheless.

He was referring to the Jat consolidation created by Congress under the leadership of Bhupender Singh Hooda. This was to counter BJP anti-Jat consolidation upon which BJP's 2014 election campaign was based and continued even in 2019.

If current trends hold, BJP is little ahead of Congress in Haryana but none are in position to form the Government on their own.

Haryana Election Results 2019: There has been communication gap with voters in Haryana, says BJP's Kailash Vijayvargiya

The BJP government in Haryana had done a "brilliant job" in the past five years but there has been some communication gap between the party and the voters, senior party leader Kailash Vijayvargiya said as the state appeared poised for a hung assembly.

"Although we have done good work in Haryana in the last five years, it seems there has been some communication gap between voters and the party. It seems that we couldn't take our message to the voters," Mr Vijayvargiya said.

In 2014 Harayana assembly polls Mr Vijayvargiya was in charge of elections in that state.

The BJP had set a target of winning 75 seats this time. It is leading in 37 seats, while the Congress is ahead in 35 constituencies. The fledgling Jannayak Janta Party, which fought its maiden assembly polls, is ahead in seven seats.

Haryana Election Results 2019: "Would Have Won A Full Majority If...": Congress's Man Of Moment BS Hooda

The Congress surprised itself in Haryana today as it seemed to have pulled off an unexpected double-figure tally in the BJP-ruled state."

The counting of votes threw up the possibility of a fractured verdict, leaving the party in with a chance of coming to power with support from Dushyant Chautala's Jannayak Janata Party (JJP).
The Congress's man of the moment in Haryana is Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the party's old warhorse and two-time chief minister.

The Congress was leading in 32 of Haryana's 90 seats, giving a close fight to the BJP, which led in 40 seats.

"We would have won a full majority if we had more time. The trends are in our favour," Mr Hooda told NDTV.

Senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad concurred with the view, as he told NDTV that the Congress would have performed much better if Mr Hooda had been in action six months earlier.

Haryana Election Result News: "Kingmaker" Jannayak Janata Party to hold party executive meet on Friday

The Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which emerged as kingmaker in the elections, refused to open its cards as the Congress courted it to form government in the state.

JJP leader Dushyant Singh Chautala said he has called a meeting of the party executive at 11 a.m. on Friday in Delhi to discuss the party's strategy. His comments came amid reports that he was insisting on the chief minister's post as a condition for a post-poll tie-up.

Latest trends showed that no party was in a position to cross the half-way mark in the 90-member Haryana Assembly.

"I believe the key to the new government is in the hands of the JJP," said Dushyant Chautala earlier in the day as counting trends indicated rapid gains for the Congress, with the BJP not even likely to cross the halfway mark.

Dushyant Chautala is the great grandson of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal and grandson of jailed INLD leader O.P. Chautala. JJP's party symbol incidentally is the "Key".

The JJP, which is less than a year old, emerged from a split in the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) after an infighting among the Chautala clan.

Dushyant, who was MP in 2014, formed the new party with his brother Digvijay Chautala.
