Elections 2019 Phase 5 Highlights: Trinamool Worker Alleges Attack By 15 Men In Bengal's Arambagh

Violence has been reported from West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir as 51 constituencies across seven states vote today in the fifth phase. Arjun Singh, BJP candidate in Bengal's Barrackpore, alleged that he was attacked by Trinamool Congress workers this morning. In another incident in Bongaon Lok Sabha seat, one Trinamool Congress and one cop was injured in the incident.

In Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian, two polling booths in Shopian were set on fire this morning. A grenade attack was reported in Pulwama where 40 CRPF men were killed in February.

Voting is being held in 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 12 in Rajasthan, seven seats each in West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, five in Bihar and four in Jharkhand. In Jammu and Kashmir, polling is taking place in Ladakh constituency, Pulwama and Shopian districts of Anantnag sea

Top BJP and Congress leaders, including UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, are among the key candidates. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal are the key states polling today.

In Uttar Pradesh, Amethi, Raebaerily and Lucknow are the key constituencies to look out for. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has been challenged by Union Minister Smriti Irani for the second time in Amethi, and in Lucknow, Union Minister Rajnath Singh is seeking reelection. The SP-BSP-RLD alliance has chosen Poonam Saxena, wife of actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha as its candidate against Rajnath Singh. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is again contesting from Raebareily, BJP has fielded ex-Congressman Dinesh Singh Tripathi against her.

A Trinamool Congress worker was allegedly attacked by 15 men in Bengal's Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency near booth number 107 in Khanakool. He claims around 15 guys attacked him with lathis while he was returning after voting.

Two Men On Election Duty Die In MP In Separate Incidents
Two men, including a Home Guard, on election duty died in separate incidents in Madhya Pradesh today, news agency PTI has reported. Home Guard Mahesh Dubey, deployed at a polling booth in Betul constituency, died due to cardiac arrest on this morning, state Chief Electoral Officer V L Kantha Rao said. Besides, a kotwar (village watchman), Nandulal Nagle,  who was also on poll duty in Betul constituency, died after suffering a heart attack on Saturday, he said.

Phase 5 Elections: Rahul Gandhi Ensuring Booth Capturing In Amethi, Alleges Smriti Irani
Union Minister Smriti Irani accused the Congress of booth capturing in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi as voting took place in the constituency where she is challenging Rahul Gandhi. Arjun Singh, BJP candidate from Barrackpore in Bengal, has alleged that he was attacked by TMC workers. "I was attacked by goons from the Trinamool Congress party who have been brought from outside. Those people were scaring away our voters. I have been injured."

Arjun Singh was formerly with the ruling Trinamool Congress. He left the party in March. He is contesting against Trinamool candidate and former railway minister Dinesh Trivedi.

Two Polling Booths Set On Fire In J&K's Shopian
  • Two polling booths in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian have been set on fire. Ladakh, Pulwama and Shopian are voting in the state today.  
  • Due to security concerns, polling staff had to be airlifted and taken to polling booths at Zainpora area of Shopian district.

  • In February, 40 CRPF men were killed when a convoy was attacked. Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed the responsibility of the attack.
